Your Questions About Self Development Books

Steven asks…
What are the best self-development books published in the last 20 or so years?
MKWeb answers:
These are the best sellers in the United States not necessarily the best.
Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, John Gray
Body-for-Life, Bill Phillips, Michael D'Orso
Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Robert C. Atkins
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey

Joseph asks…
Self development books say that any habit which is follwed for 21 days will become a habit. Is it true?
MKWeb answers:
Well, there are evidences about that. But i would suggest that in order for this to be successful, you need to have a reinforcing factor. For a behavior has a greater chance of being repeated if it is rewarded. Eventually, the behavior will become a habit. This is conditioning anyway, and you can always condition yourself to do something..^_^

Linda asks…

MKWeb answers:
Your Best Life Now - Joel Olsteen
Awaken The Giant Within - Anthony Robbins
Unlimited Power - Anthony Robbins
Winning With People - John Maxwell (All his books are good)
Battlefield of the Mind - Joyce Meyers

Laura asks…
This is my opinion about self development books . Do you agree with me ?
Please say " Yes " or "No" (with comments if any) with each point .
1.Nobody can give you a strategy for success . Everyone has to develop their own strategy .
2.It is better to behave/say more natural way than act as per these books[ like " Always positive , always happy ,etc)]
3.When you try to follow these books , you will lose many of your natural strengths & good qualities .
4.All these books concentrate more on future than present . So you are not able to enjoy the present moment.
5.Our learning mainly come from just day to day observations . These books cannot change us much . If it changes also it is only temporary .
6.These books doesn't consider cultural factors & realities .
7.It is better NOT TO READ THIS KIND OF BOOKS .It is better to "accept yourself as you are instead of changing you so much & enjoy the life" . Observe your surroundings and learn as per your experience .
MKWeb answers:
Yes and no. It's a huge genre. Some of it is a bit of light philosophy and some of it is pure crap. Some of it has theology in it and makes that more palatable to the masses.
I think you can buy "Why bad things happen to good people," in this section. That book has some helpful things to say.
I think you need to be a critical thinker when you read--and unfortunately if you are needing help you can't always be that. You make good points but lets not ban any books. Just proceed with caution.

Susan asks…
